Healthy Lake Boon

A Massachusetts Grant launched this ambitious project

With a grant of $154,000 from MA Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP), the Lake Boon community has begun monitoring the lake to assess its health, understand its underlying hydrology, and make recommendations for action to improve and sustain its health, especially as climate change causes warmer temperatures and increased precipitation.

1. Monitor the Lake

Volunteer Citizen Scientists (mostly lake residents) collect water samples and take measurements using standard science protocols

2. Analyze the Data

Scientists review the data, develop new insights into the lake’s hydrology, and look for trends, especially for algae and other threats to the lake.

3. Act for the long-term

Based on the analysis, scientists, lake residents and the Stow and Hudson Conservation Commissions recommend how to improve and sustain the health of the lake.

Hallock Point success!

May 22, 2021 — Stow Town Meeting approved acquisition of Hallock Point (through Chapter 61), to preserve it as a natural site for all to enjoy. This is a major success, and will help sustain the health of Lake Boon, by limiting development.

How does run-off affect the lake?

May 31, 2021 — After three days of rain, volunteers will do special measurements to see how much run-off affects the lake. On the first foray of the day, Kirk Westphal spotted this stunning loon!

May 20, 2021 — Happy 100th Birthday to Lake Boon Association! The annual Lake Boon Gazette had a feature article on Healthy Lake Boon. . .and celebration of 100 years since founding of LBA in 1921.
